Women's Health and Beauty

The aim of this subject is to provide students with an introduction to Women’s Health and Beauty, by looking at the health, wellbeing and personal styling skills that are essential requirements of the beauty industry. The subject will include practical skills and theoretical knowledge to cover topics such as skin care and protection, makeup application (including stage makeup skills), and nail care (including a manicure workshop). The subject will also look at the importance of food for good health and body image, and exercise to maintain fitness and flexibility. Students in the class will also complete a unit about pregnancy, female sexual reproduction, women’s health issues, harm minimization and party safety. Students in the class will also have a unique look at women in other cultures, and how women in other regions of the world care and look after themselves. This subject fee to cover the cost of guest speakers, makeup and skin materials, hygiene products for makeup application and excursions that meet the needs of the course. Students will need to have paid these fees prior to commencing the semester in the subject, or risk losing their position in this class. Students participating in the class will also be required to provide their own mascara, liquid eyeliner and kohl pencil eyeliner as part of their own makeup kit. Other makeup items that can be applied using hygienic methods will be provided by the school; however students are always encouraged to bring in their own items from home that they may feel more comfortable using.

Assessment

Assessment is completed via a series of assignments and projects, research tasks, a visual portfolio display. There is also an end of semester exam to conclude the unit. The students will be required to participate in three sessions per week, with at least one session being practically derived. Students may be required to manufacture their own hand/body scrubs, or develop a healthy breakfast in a practical session. Students may also take part in hands on makeup workshops to learn specific makeup skills and techniques. Some sessions throughout the semester will involve being taught by a guest presenter, for example manicure skills or makeup for stage productions
